March 18, 2020                                              Corona Virus Update

Things are changing every day with the Corona Virus.  The President has called us all to stay home and avoid contact with others.  Our bishop, Bishop Jeremiah Park, has asked that all group worship and other church activities stop immediately.  Therefore we will not have worship or any other activities at church for at least the next two weeks.  This includes choir practices and the Red Door Café.

So please stay home and make the best of this time of trial.  I will be contacting our churches through Facebook, our web page and emails.  My public phone number is 570-489-0713.  My email is drepenning@susumc.org.

This week please keep in prayer; medical professionals, first responders, grocery store employees and others who are being over worked in this crisis.  Remember also those who are loosing their income during the shutdowns or because of being isolated. 

Personally, I am keeping a journal of at least one different thing I intentionally do each day during the Corona isolation.  Monday my family needed to go shopping.  I took Ariyah to Home Depot (Her favorite store) to by some materials.  Tuesday (Corona 2) Barb and I took an evening walk in the woods behind our house.  Today I hope to go canoeing.

Sermon March 15, 2020

Psalm 95 Exodus 17 1-7 John 4:7-26


Many people missed Sunday’s message; some because of the Covid19 virus.

So here is a summary of the message. Since the virus may keep some if not all out of church on Sunday, I will work on getting this sent out at least on Facebook for the rest of the Sunday’s in Lent.

The Gift of Worship

This week is in the middle of Lent. Lent is traditionally a serious, quiet, self reflective time. So the beginning of Psalm 95 is surprising. It begins:

“Come let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of Our Salvation.”

It goes on to call us to worship and bow down to the Lord. Like the Israelites in the Desert of Sin, we too often have our worship and praise of God interrupted by a common habit: Complaining. Exodus 17:3 says the people “grumbled against Moses.” That day they grumbled because it seemed there wasn’t water for them to drink. Because of their grumbling or complaining, they wandered in the desert for 40 years and never “entered God’s rest.” They never saw the Promised Land on the other side of the Jordan River.

Lent is a time to enter God’s rest and to simplify our lives so we may be reconciled to God and to one another. Normally we tend to add things to our lives during Lent. This year, right in the middle of Lent, we are being challenged greatly by the Covid 19 virus. The challenge is calling us to restrict our activities globally. We are giving up meetings, work, school, sports, games, social functions, and business activities. Some of us are out of work. Like the Jews in the desert, we too can grumble about our situations. We can be angry and complain all over the place. But, in the middle of Psalm 95 we are called to turn back to God, and take this time of reduced activity to refocus our lives on the most important things. Use this Lent for what it was intended: to renew our relationships with God and one another.

I have chosen to celebrate this time as time to rest from the business of life and refocus on God and family. I might even get a few things done that I haven’t had time to do in the last months.

So let’s all stop grumbling, sit down and enjoy God’s Rest: the pause called Lent and now the pause called Covid 19 isolation.

Emergency Response Teams  & Volunteers In Mission Teams Needed for Hurricane Response

Florida:
The Florida Annual Conference needs teams right away. All volunteers will be accepted, regardless of ERT Training. Individuals and teams are encouraged to register and should expect to be deployed in the southern part of the state.

Texas:
The Texas Annual Conference (Houston and North Gulf Cost) is very much in need of volunteer help. In the last few weeks, teams have mucked out and gutted more than 6000 homes, but they are still finding communities where the damage has not been assessed.
Volunteers should be over age 18, Safe Sanctuaries certified, and at least one member of the team should be ERT Trained.

Rio Texas:
The Rio Texas Conference (Corpus Christi and Southern Gulf Coast Areas) are taking ERT’s for approximately another 4 weeks and are accepting reservations for Long-Term Recovery teams after that. There are two different registration links, so make sure you use the right one! Additionally, they are looking for individuals who would be willing to volunteer for longer periods of time with site management and volunteer coordination. Contact Eugene Hileman (ashileman@riotexas.org) if you can help with this ministry.

Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands (US Territories):
This is still a government-controlled situation. They are in the emergency relief phase. UMCOR is releasing grants to Puerto Rico quickly and talking daily with the Bishop and other church leaders on the islands.
